Title: Mothers’ Early Infant Feeding Experiences In Two Saudi Maternity Hospitals: A Cross-Sectional Survey

Background: Little is known about factors affecting the low breastfeeding rates soon after birth and for the first six months in Saudi Arabia.

Aims: This project aimed elicit women’s views, experiences and observations of hospital practices that may influence breastfeeding at King Abdulaziz University Hospital (KAUH), Maternity and Children’s Hospital (MCH) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Moreover, to identify factors that influence mothers’ breastfeeding initiation and exclusivity after birth, to identify mothers’ observations of the policy, procedure, practices and services of the hospital related to breastfeeding support and promotion and to provide feedback to the hospitals that will facilitate them to promote breastfeeding.

Methods: A cross sectional survey was administered to 307 postnatal mothers at KAUH and MCH. Data were summarised using numbers and percentages and presented stratified by the hospital in which women gave birth. Categorical data were analysed by chi-square test. The level of significance was set at 0.05.
